Why Recruitment Is The Perfect Graduate Job

Why Recruitment Is The Perfect Graduate Job Image

There are masses of opportunities out there for graduates, and these days you can find a job for pretty much every hobby/interest. Problematically though, the graduate job market is extremely competitive, and a lot of students don’t really know what they want from a career, making the process rather difficult.

Everyone has different motivations going into a career, and what may appeal to some, is entirely irrelevant to others; the following is a list of benefits of starting a career in recruitment, and how it may relate to the motivations of a recently graduated young professional. Have a read through this article to see why Recruitment is a great choice for a grad job.

1.   High earnings

With excellent earning potential and rapid career progression, you can move quickly from being a graduate who’s spent the last 3 years living off supernoodles, to an Audi-driving Consultant within a year or two (depending on how good you are with money, obviously). You can ditch the supermarket own brand vodka, and say goodbye to living off a fiver a week, for a role in recruitment will allow you to earn the money you learned to live without at uni. Money motivation is a key part of recruitment, and this is heightened by the fact that you likely went without having disposable income for the whole of uni!

The average starting salary for a graduate in Recruitment (in London) is around the £20,000 mark, plus commission you’ll be looking at a realistic take home of around £35,000 in your first year – not too shabby is it?

2.   Human interaction

Do you envisage yourself sitting quietly in a corner of an office all day, counting the ceiling tiles or waiting for the earliest possible time to get your next coffee? If this sounds like your dream job, then recruitment simply isn’t for you. However, if you’re a people person then you should definitely consider recruitment, in this role you will meet and engage with a wide variety of people from all walks of life, and build lasting relationships with them. You spend the majority of your time speaking to clients and candidates, understanding their needs, keeping leads warm and networking – sounds better than reorganising your paperclips 4 times in one day, doesn’t it?

3.   Incentives, incentives, incentives

These vary company to company, and understandably, the larger companies can afford to splash more cash than the smaller ones – the medium to large enterprises really can offer you excellent incentives in return for your hard work, and do so in abundance. Think holidays abroad to 5* hotels, high achiever’s lunches at Michelin starred restaurants, team outings, drinks and dinner etc. – basically, things you’d do with your friends, but instead, your company will be the one to cover the hefty bill!

4.   Atmosphere and buzz, and thrill of the win

Recruitment really is an industry for the competitive, those people who love to win and thrive in a competitive environment – when one person makes a deal, it motivates everyone else to do the same. To accentuate the buzz of the win, some companies have clackers and others have gongs, both of which are designed to celebrate the highs, to get everyone pumped to hit the phone.

Nothing beats the buzz when you successfully place a candidate. The client is happy, the candidate is happy and you’re definitely happy. The fulfilment of having filled a challenging client brief is hugely satisfying, regardless of whether it’s your first or fiftieth deal. Happiness is the key point here – must I go on? I will anyway. As well as experiencing the rush and adrenaline of proving your talent, you’ll be eligible for bonusing, incentives and high commission, as well as getting you higher up the career ladder.

5.   International opportunities

An immense benefit of following a path in recruitment is that it is a globally required role. A good recruiter has no shortage of options after acquiring experience, and if travel or relocation is your goal, then recruitment is the one for you. This is particularly true for global recruitment companies that can transfer you to other branches (it’s not uncommon for a company to have a New York office). The world is quite literally your oyster.

These things are big motivators for a huge number of graduates, which is why it is such a popular choice within the graduate community – if you’d like to see how your traits and character compare to that of a successful recruiter, see our full post on that here.
