Don’t give up on your career dream – I didn’t!
Just want to have a bit of ramble here about my career to date and my influencers (to those who will listen, I won't take offense if you don’t).
I was pondering on my career within recruitment, I was told 13 years ago, ”it’s a horrible job, are you sure?”
Then I met the manager that interviewed me and gave me the same words but in such a different way and I knew this person was the person who was going to help me reach my potential. We were different characters but we respected each other.
I accepted, I was trained, I was stubborn, I ignored some advice but in the whole I was very successful at this first business but I needed more from my life and relocated not knowing anyone to the South. Big gamble but it paid off.
This led me to make a choice to join a business, and it just didn’t work out no fault of anyone just one of those things, but in reality I just didn’t ”interview them properly”, I changed who I was to get the job and I didn’t take a brief I should have done.
This was an amazing lesson for me, I moved on, but this is where my life completely changed. I worked out what was important to me and what I needed from my next company and questioned every business I met.
Fundamentally I made the right choice, I was there for over 6 years, had the best owner (for me) to work with, great fun and progression just kept coming and I then made a name for myself in the Recruitment to Recruitment industry.
I was managed well, respected and I wanted to make money for both myself and for my owners.
I have had days in this career that I have hated and wanted to give up on it, but ultimately this is a career I love and even though we probably aren’t universally liked in the career world it is a career I would do all over again.
I’ve made mistakes, I haven’t always placed everyone into the right businesses but it has never been on purpose and that will never change.
I care as much as I did the 1st day I walked into training with my manager.
Moral of the story, you won’t always get your choices right and that’s fine but learn to take your own advice – Not all recruiters are bad people in fact I have placed and work with some the most compelling and inspirational people you could meet.
Don’t shy away at talking to a good recruiter, you never know they can help you get your priorities in line with your career goals.
